If you thought legacy tours were a fading trend, guess again. Case in point, TheIncubus/Deftones/DFA 1979 performance at Austin360 Amphitheater on Monday sold-out well in advance of the date. The alternative rock bands from Southern California who were both popular in the early 2000s have different aesthetics and backgrounds. They also draw different crowds. The heavier, more metal Deftones led by Chino Moreno attracted a sizeable Latino contingent while the Calabasas (West LA suburb) bred Incubus' core fan appeared to be white, anglo-thirtysomethings reliving their college days. Thus the co-headliners played... Continue reading

Live music review: Sixth year a success at Utopiafest
The little festival that could. That is the tagline Utopiafest should adopt to describe the music festival that produced their sixth event this past weekend in a remote part of Central Texas while limiting attendance and booking great national and local acts. One reason for the success of the festival is the vision of co-founder Aaron Brown who basically put together a show that possess all the ...Continue reading at Examiner.com

Live music review: rare Hardcore Devo performance thrilled Austin fans
![]() |
Photo: Suzanne Cordeiro |
Pioneering new wave act Devo has enjoyed cult status since breaking through with commercial hit, "Whip It" in 1980. When founding member Bob Cassale (Bob2) passed away unexpectedly this year the surviving members decided to embark on a ten city tour featuring music from 1974-77 when the band first formed in Ohio. Proceeds from the tour were donated to Cassale's family. It is telling the band chose Austin to finish their tour at the award-winning ACL Live at the Moody they sold-out when they last played the venue. Gerald Cassale has mentioned how much the group likes... Continue reading at Examiner.com

Live music review: White Denim are ready to be Austin's next big thing
Austin writers have a penchant for prematurely announcing the "next big thing" in regards to local bands, however, there is nothing premature in claiming White Denim is an act that is going places. We knew it from the first time we saw the band several years ago at the old Emo's downtown. Last Thursday the band displayed a maturity in their live performance at Stubb's BBQ that indicated theJames Petralli-led group has already jumped from buzz act to national recognition. The jammy, psych-rock infused set the foursome played featured almost no... Continue reading at Examiner.com

Live music review: The Octopus Project's dance party at Spiderhouse
The live music scene in Austin is as varied as it is brilliant. Amid the Texas music, indie rock, alt-country and folk music that abounds there is a small but talented electro-pop scene led by The Octopus Project. While their latest album, "Fever Forms" (2013) is a great listen, nothing compares to the quartet's live show. The Red Bull Sound Select dance party the band played at Spiderhouse Ballroom last night is a perfect example of how the group merges their... Continue reading at Examiner.com

Live music review: Reverend Horton Heat mixed new material with old at Emo's
Saturday evening Reverend Horton Heat played some smoking guitar at Emo's with Two Tons of Steel from San Antonio and Austin's own Dale Watson. Jim "The Rev" Heath showed off his massive guitar chops on his signature Gretsch hollow-body. Bandmates Jimbo Wallace (upright bass) and Scott Churilla (drums) were just as impressive. Wallace demonstrated his slap technique on the bass while Churilla twirled his drumsticks at every opportunity while keeping perfect time. Heath even invited... Continue reading at Examiner.com

Live music review: Fun Fun Fun Fest Day 3: MGMT, Jurassic 5, Bonobo, The Polyphonic Spree, Cayucas
The final day of Fun Fun Fun Fest at Auditorium Shores in Austin on Sunday found us weary but willing. Our photographer, Emily Lim was excited about Cayucas from Los Angeles performing an early set and made to the venue in time to grab a few choice shots. She hung around for the joyous romp that is The Polyphonic Spree, a large, symphonic band that wears matching choir robes as if they were participating in a church service. We made sure to... Live music review: Local Natives honored to tape debut ACL TV episode (Photos)
There is a special feeling attending an Austin City Limits TV (ACL TV) taping (like getting to peek behind the curtain). During Austin City Limits Music Festival, when artists appear on the show a heightened sense of excitement permeates the theater as it did last night when Local Natives made their ACL TV debut. The Los Angeles indie rock quintet only has... Continue reading at Examiner.com

Live music slideshow: Rancid 20th Anniversary concert at ACL Live
While we promised a complete review of Rancid's stop at ACL Live for their 20th Anniversary tour to another publication, we did not say anything about photographs. Monday's 28-song show included all the hits; "Roots Radicals", "Time Bomb", "Olympia, WA" and Ruby Soho all appeared in the set list. The show was epic. Lot of mohawks, tattoos, Doc Marten's and crowd surfing dominated a fun night. Find the complete set list is below.

Live music review: My Bloody Valentine drops noise bomb on Austin Music Hall
Friday evening UK shoegaze pioneers My Bloody Valentine took the stage at Austin Music Hall in support of their first studio effort in 25 years. Solo act, New Fumes opened the show. As expected, Kevin Shields and his band played one of the loudest shows in Austin since UK band, Mogwai played Stubb's a few years ago. The band, in effect, dropped a... Live music review: Wilco taped Austin City Limits TV, sold out ACL Live
Wilco appeared at The Moody Theater at ACL Live on consecutive nights this week. Wednesday evening was an Austin City Limits TV taping. Lead singer, Jeff Tweedy mentioned it was the band's fourth appearance on the show. The alternative rock band from Chicago followed up an elegant performance in front of the TV cameras with a rocking, sold-out ACL Live show last night that appropriately included a number of songs from "Summerteenth" (1999) an album primarily recorded at Willie Nelson's Spicewood Studios near Austin.
