Live SXSW music review: Delta Spirit, Springsteen, Quiet Company, Soldier Thread

With one half of SXSW music week behind us, we took a look back at the standout performances thus far. Rather than take the approach of skipping local acts we can see all year, Austin bands were mixed into our schedule with national acts. There were notable appearances by Spirit Animal, Delta Spirit, Bruce Springsteen, Ruthie Foster, Carolyn Wonderland, The Soldier Thread and Built To Spill.

Live music review: Radiohead ACL TV taping blows away fans

When Radiohead announced their tour stop in Austin at the Frank Erwin Center last year tickets sold-out in minutes. Their subsequent scheduling of an Austin City Limits TV taping only served to hype the indie-rock kings visit to the "Live Music Capital" further. Only the opening ACL TV taping at The Moody Theatre at the W Hotel had as much pre-concert buzz as Radiohead's taping did.

Live music review: Quiet Company played to sell-out crowd at Stubb's BBQ Friday

Local favorites, Quiet Company who have been on a steady, upward trajectory over the past couple of years, sold-out Stubb's BBQ Friday evening. The band dusted off some older songs, broke out light sabers (yes, you read correctly) and left fans sated and smiling. While the light sabers and ensuing "rave up" led by drummer, Jeff Weathers and trombone player and newly minted percussionist, Cody Ackors. It was a humorous departure from the usual during a performance that

SXSW Party Announcment: Sx Fusion II slated for March 13 on Town Lake

Some of you may recall I hosted an event with Mike Dominguez during South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival last year. This year, with my schedule busier than ever, I vowed to attend and cover the event and not try to plan a party during a week of countless parties. We had an offer we could not refuse from a venue location that is perfect for SXSW.

Joe's Crab Shack Town Lake has offered full support of the event which will feature warm appetizers from Joe's, musical guest, Chelsea Crowell (granddaughter of Johnny Cash), downtown views from the patio along Town Lake. Thankfully the venue is conveniently located 11/2 blocks East of S. Congress Ave in walking distance to downtown. We are excited about the event and invite you to join us.

Live music review: Grupo Fantasma live taping at Beauty Bar Ballroom

Despite the fact that Latin funk is a far cry from New Orleans jazz, the live DVD and album taping Grupo Fantasma recorded last night at Beauty Bar Ballroom was befitting Mardi Gras events this weekend. The Grammy-winning artists pulled out all the stops for their DVD recording including lasers, balloons, beach balls and even an inflatable cactus that made its way into the crowd of gyrating fans that filled the venue to near capacity.

Live music review: The Polyphonic Spree led a joyous celebration of music at LZR

The first thought we had when we heard The Polyphonic Spree were coming back to Austin was, "How long has it been?" In fact, four years have passed since Tim DeLaughter and company performed live. The former Tripping Daisy front man has been working on a side project and writing more material for the Spree.

Roky Erickson tour documentary featuring a SXSW show in works

Austin psych-rock pioneer, Roky Erickson will be the subject of a tour documentary, Two-Headed Dog that follows the eccentric and oft-troubled musician and his son, Jegar on a tour beginning March 1st in Los Angeles and culminating in a South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival performance at Threadgill's downtown after stops in New Zealand and Australia. The film's preproduction costs are being funded entirely by

SxSW music preview: Austin bands are gearing up for the festival next month

Austin, Texas has always been a special place for music. From the city's humble beginnings, art, music and culture have been woven into the fabric of resident's lives. Next month Austin renews the tradition of throwing open the gates of the Live Music Capital to the rest of the world to see. It is called, SxSW Interactive, Film and Music Festival. Whew. We get tired just saying the name, let alone trudging across downtown for 10 days chasing after the elusive new sound it seems all are seeking.

Live music review: Oh Snap! Benefit ends w/ power outage, Blackout Party Feb 10

In a bizarre twist, the Oh Snap Benefit ended Saturday evening with a downtown outage that knocked out power to portions of Sixth Street including the host venue, The Parish. The outage occurred around 11:30p.m. as Lauren Larson ofUme was tuning up her guitar in the green room for their headlining set. Once it was determined that power would not be restored immediately, it became apparent that Ume along with Smoke and Feathers, The Bang Bang Theodores and Superlitebike would not perform as scheduled.
